چکیده

Unmanned Aircraft Systems are about to replace human pilots not only in dangerous, dull or tedious missions but generally where the human being is the limiting factor including size and economic issues. There is a wide range of applications for which UAVs have to be operated in non-segregated airspace in general and uncontrolled airspace in particular, regardless of civil, governmental or military usage, such as disaster and incident management, border patrol, or construction site prospection or inspection (/2/, /3/, /4/, /5/, /11/, /12/). However, all airspace users – manned or unmanned – shall adhere to the same standards, rules and laws. Depending on the airspace and its usage – in particular by anyone other than the UAS – functional and technical requirements for the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles can be derived aiming on the minimisation of hazards to third parties in the air or on the ground. A reliable aircraft collision avoidance system is the key enabler for providing access to unsegregated airspace. However, the procedures preventing mid air collision start well before any close encounter itself and cover in a holistic approach the topics airspace definition and usage, flight planning, provision of seperation and finally sense and avoid.

Strategies for Pre-Emptive Mid-Air Collision Avoidance in Budgerigars

We have investigated how birds avoid mid-air collisions during head-on encounters. Trajectories of birds flying towards each other in a tunnel were recorded using high speed video cameras. Analysis and modelling of the data suggest two simple strategies for collision avoidance: (a) each bird veers to its right and (b) each bird changes its altitude relative to the other bird according to a pres...

A New Approach for Designing Safer Collision Avoidance Systems

The Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of mid-air collision and is currently mandated worldwide on all large transport aircraft. Engineering the collision avoidance logic was a very costly undertaking that spanned several decades. The development followed an iterative process where the logic was specified using pseudocode, evaluat...

Animal Locomotion In Silico: A POMDP-Based Tool to Study Mid-Air Collision Avoidance Strategies in Flying Animals

In this paper, we bring modelling techniques from robotics to enable biologists perform an in silico study of mid-air collision avoidance strategies of flying animals. This in silico system is distinct from flying animal dynamics and trajectory simulation, as the focus is on the strategy behind the observed motions, rather than the specific motions in space. Our in silico system consists of a m...

Collision Avoidance of Two Autonomous Quadcopters

Traffic collision avoidance systems (TCAS) are used in order to avoid incidences of mid-air collisions between aircraft. We present a game-theoretic approach of a TCAS designed for autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A variant of the canonical example of game-theoretic learning, fictitious play, is used as a coordination mechanism between the UAVs, that should choose between the alterna...
